Housing the Water Monitor
As with any monitor, a large enclosure is a must. Water monitors can reach 6' in length so your enclosure should be no less than 8 feet long, 4 feet deep and 3 fet high. A nice pool area about 6 to 8 inches deep should be provided for adults to swim/bath in. For large the monitors thatI have kept, I use a 20 gallon long aquarium for a pool for my younger ones and a 40 gallon breeder tank for the adult monitors.
The recommended substrate for monitors is cypress mulch. It is large enough not to get ingested and holds the humidity better than paper and Aspen. Large thick branches can be securely placed in the enclosure for climbing. The hard part is providing a hide box large enough for the monitor to get into. The hide boxes can be attached to the roof of the cage leaving the floor space open, with some branches leading to it, they have easy access.
