Housing the Vieled Chameleon

Chameleons are arboreal, spending most of their time climbing in the trees, bushes, and plants. Therefore an enclosure with plenty of plants, branches, and other climbing articles is needed. For hatchlings and juveniles a 10 gallon aquarium is a good first home. No substrate is needed (this makes cleaning much easier). A screen top is recommended for plenty of ventilation. If you choose to do so, you can even turn the aquarium on end to give a more arboreal sense to the enclosure. Just make sure that the screen is attached securely. By providing plenty of plants (live or plastic) you will give your chameleon a sense of security by allowing it to hide among the leaves, thus lowering the stress level. Adults require more space so the minimum recommended enclosure size is 36L x 36W x 48H inches. This will provide your adult(s) with plenty of space. Males and females should be kept visually separate (meaning they should not be allowed to see each other) until they are at least 5 to 6 months of age.
