Lighting, Heating and Humidity for the Savannah Monitor
Lighting
Savannah Monitors are active during the day and should be provided with at least 12 to 14 hours of daylight everyday. They do best with ultraviolet B for calcium metabolism, and a regular photoperiod. Use a Vita-Lite or other UVB producing fluorescent tube (not a plant or aquarium light tube) that is set on a timer. Do not use a black light or a very high output ultraviolet bulb as it will damage the monitor's eyes and cause immune suppression.
Heating
Savannah Monitors come from a hot, dry enviroment. They require daytime temperatures of 85 to 90 degrees with a basking spot of about 95 degrees. Nighttime temperatures can be 10 to 15 degrees lower. Undertank heat pads will ensure a constant temperature throughout the entire enclosure, this in addition to a ceramic heat emitter for the basking spot will ensure that the temperatures are correct.
Humidity
As Savannah Monitors are from a dry habitat, they will only require a bowl of water in their cage. No special humidity levels are are needed as long as it is not too humid (not above 25%).
