Housing the Leopard Gecko

As Leopard Geckos are bascially a small lizard, an adult can be housed in a relatively small enclosure. A 10 gallon aquarium (20" long) is good for one leo until it become a young adult at around 6 inches. A full size adult would require a enclosure about the size of a 15 gallon aquarium (24" long). If you are going to be keeping more than one in the same enclosure make sure you have a large enough one. A 20 gallon aquarium (30" long) will house 2 adult leos nicely. The bedding or substrate for adults can be Aspen, cypress mulch, or sand. For babies and juveniles, it is recommended to use paper towels. As they are very absorbant and easily romoved for cleaning.

Always have a hide box in the cage. Leopard Geckos require a place to hide during the daylight hours. I keep two in the enclosure. A normal hide box, and another one called a humid hide box.

Some people suggest not having a water bowl in the cage and misting the cage several times a day. I have a rock water bowl that is real low and about ½" deep. This I keep topped with fresh water every day. I find that leos will go right up the the edge and lap the water to drink. It is also recommended to mist at least once a day.
