Reproduction of the Green Tree Python
Green tree pythons usually begin breeding behavior in late fall and winter. Breeding behavior is initiated by weather changes, cool temperatures, short daylight, heavy weight of females and shedding. Both sexes will stop feeding during the mating season; males may remain off feed for more than five months each year.
Eggs are laid in cluches of 6 to 30 eggs. The female will coil around her clutch of eggs. She is capable of warming her eggs by muscular shivering and twitching. This python will remain coiled around her eggs until hatching in 45 to 52 days. Brightly colored red or yellow hatchlings are 12" to 15" long.
