Housing the Garter Snake & Ribbon Snake

Garter and Ribbons snakes are long and very slim. Their enclosures must be escape proof!! They have a way of finding even the smallest of holes to get out. As these are small snakes a 10 gallon aquarium with a screen top and locking tabs will be adequate for one adult garter. Substrate can be newspaper, paper towels, Aspen, or wood chips. Remember, do not use cedar! I, myself, use cypress wood chips bought from Home Depot. I bake them in the over for 25 to 30 minutes at like 175 degrees to kill of any little critters that may be in there. These come in large bags and are very inexpensive compared to other forms like it. Like all snakes, I recommend a hide box be placed in the cage for the snake to get away from everything. Other furnishings can include a potted plant, a half log, and some braches. This is basically up to you and your imagination. Just remember, you have to clean the cage, so if you pack it full of furnishings, they have to be removed and cleaned as well.
