General Information About the Blue-Tongue Skink (Tiliqa gigas, T. scincoidies, T. intermedia)

The three most comon blue tongue skinks kept as pets are the New Guinea Blue Tongue, the northern blue tongue, and the eastern blue tongue. They are other species , but they are not regularly kept as pets. Most blue tongues have a heavy build, broad bodies set on small legs with delicate toes. The broad, triangular head is typical of skinks. The deep, berry blue tongue us vividly offset against the deep pink interior of the mouth. Well cared for captive specimens can live as long as 20 years. Depending on the species they may reach an adult length of over 20 inches.

Another of our favorite "starter" or first time lizards. We find them to be gentle and very laid back about being handled. They lack the sharp claws and teeth of monitors and iguanas, so biting and scratching is hardly a worry.
