Housing the Blue-Tongue Skink

Most babies can be house in a 10 gallon aquarium. Adults need morespace and should be kept in no less than a 55 gallon aquarium of other enclosure with a floor space of around 48"x18".

There are a couple of types of substrate that can be used for blue tongues, Cypress mulch, paper towels, newspaper, Aspen shavings, and sand. DO NOT use cedar or pine shavings as these are harmful to reptiles. For babies it is not recommended using sand as this can be ingested and cause blockages in the digestive track.

A hide box is needed to allow the skink to get out of site and reduce the stress level. A humid hide box is also another good idea. It helps provide some humidity for the skink and aids in the shedding process.

As they are ground dwellers they do not require branches to climb on, or rocks. But you can decorate your enclosure making sure there is ample ground space. A water bowl large enough for them to bath in, but shallow enough for them to climb in and out of should be provided at all times. You may find they deficate in the water, so be watchful and change as often as needed. The enclosure shuld be spot cleaned as needed, removing any waste or old food.
