General Information About the Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps)
The "Bearded Dragon" earns it name by the very pronounced beard shown in defense displays as well as mating behavior. By puffing out their throat area, both males and females can display a beard, but the males have a generally darker beard that is almost black. Adult Bearded Dragons average 15 to 24 inches in length, while hatchlings are between 3 and 4 inches. Young dragons usually start showing their colors at around 2 months old.
Bearded Dragons can become extremly tame. They are a terrific "first" lizard! If the proper care is given a dragon can live up to 10 years in captivity. There was a report of one living 20 years in captivity in Austrailia.
