Housing the Bearded Dragon
Bearded Dragons can be housed in a variety of cages as long as their basic requirements are met. A good size enclosure for two adult dragons should have 8 square feet of floor space, so a 72"L x 24"W enclosure will suffice. I have my adult female in a 60 gallon Lizard Lounge and my two yearling juveniles in a 36" x 18" enclosure. Each has ample space. A bowl a fresh water should be kept in the cage at all times. It is also recommended to change the water on a daily basis as they tend to enjoy deficating in the water. No hide box is needed for the enclosure, but some well anchored branches and other plastic plants for climbing and decorations is not harmful. Live plants are not suggested as beardies eat vegetable matter and they will eat any live plant you may put in their enclosure.
For adults I use Play Sand found at any hardware store / home center. Sift it thuroughly, rinse several times, and let air dry. Cover the entire floor with about two inches of sand. This will keep the dragons from coming in contact with the bottom of the cage if you are using a under the tank heat mat. For babies and juveniles, I use either paper towels or a product called Kraft paper.
